India is all set to take on South Africa in Gandhi-Mandela Freedom Series for Test Matches after being thrashed by Proteas in T2OI and ODIs. India will have different captain and few different players but beating number 1 test side is not going to be an easy task even at home.
India Vs South Africa Test Matches: Freedom Series
India lost the ODI and T20I against South Africa but team is back in whites and Team India is geared up to defeat Number 1 Test Side with its new captain, Virat Kohli and his pro active strategies. We discuss India’s strength and weaknesses while facing Hashim Amla’s South Africa in Mahatma Gandhi-Nelson Mandela Freedom Series.
New Format, New Captain and New Energy: India’s Strength
India lost T20I and ODI Series with MS Dhoni leading the team but now it is ever energetic (over energetic at times) Virat Kohli who has to lead from the front as he did in Sri Lanka to win the series by 2-1. Virat’s bat works magic whenever he has captained the Indian Team and with Africans being the opponent, Virat faces his toughest challenge as the Indian Captain.
Team would see the likes of KL Rahul, R Ashwin, Cheteswar Pujara and Murali Vijay back in the team. These players did commendable job in Sri Lanka series win and they would provide the required energy booster that team needs at the moment. Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane would also be back in their favourite format hence providing the required solidity to the batting order.
India’s Weakness for Freedom Test Series
India lacks experience when it comes to Test Match level and this could benefit mighty Proteas. Absence of India’s leading bowler Ishant Sharma may also haunt India’s chances as Indian teams bowling is already under scrutiny. The form of Shikhar Dhawan is another issue to look at whereas Murali Vijay would be at the crease after some long gap which is a worrying factor.
Virat Kohli’s biggest challenge till date
Virat was the captain for India against Australia temporarily but he actually got the captain’s cap against Bangladesh which was a draw test match due to rain and then followed Sri Lanka which was a challenge but no one can deny the fact that Sri Lanka is at its low for quite a time now with its legends retiring one by one hence India had great winning chances and they grabbed it.
Freedom Test Series comes as the real big challenge for Virat Kohli, The Captain as he faces world’s best team South Africa led by Hashim Amla. South Africans have been the best tourists when it comes to cricket as they perform exceptionally well on foreign tours. South Africans will give firm challenge in every aspect of the game be it bowling, batting or fielding.
South Africa’s success depends on Hashim Amla and AB De Villiers while Faf Du Plesis and JP Duminy are always a challenge for any team. AB is biggest threat for Virat as he was to Dhoni and the results are already proven. Amla is known for his temperament and his lukewarm show in shorter formats may turn out to be a silence before the storm. In bowling department they have World number 1, Dale Steyn who is certainly the best bowler in the longest format. Steyn would ably be supported by Philander and Morne Morkel whereas spin department would be handled by Imran Tahir the performer and a new but promising, Hammer.
